Saving the best till last

On the final day of our trip to Finland we returned to Oulu province for a final day at the Black Grouse lek.

The weather had changed and it was a positively balmy – 6 degrees C as we settled into our two man hides, just warm enough to bring the blackcocks back to the lek. And boy were they spoiling for a fight! Just to add the icing to the cake it started to snow, REALLY snow, making for quite a spectacle.

What follows are a selection of images from the morning…as chosen by my other half , Pressie.

This is my particular favourite image from the session. Snow ball fight! All that fresh snow meaning lots of powder was thrown up.

The next few images come from perhaps my favourite sequence.

Ouch! That’s got to hurt.

I thought I’d finish off with a couple of images taken at the lek site for your entertainment and amusement.

I know what you are thinking. Just how big are those boots. Actually though they performed awesomely in the deep snow. Thanks to Ian Haskell for the recommendation.

And this is the hide. Looking at it now it doesn’t look as though you could fit one person in there, let alone two. Many thanks to Steve Knell for taking the shots.

And that about wraps up the trip. We had a brilliant time. Northern Finland has some stunning wildlife and it really was a dream come true to watch a Black Grouse lek. Hard work at times  but great fun and I’d like to thank Danny, Steve and Nigel for their excellent company and unfailing humour.

A final big thank you  to everyone at Finnature (http://www.finnature.fi/). To our excellent guides Arti and Erik; and to Leena who worked so hard behind the scenes to help us put the trip together.
